Events Second Zine Friendly event - 12th November 2009 by Kate

Planning for Zine Friendly take 2 in London is now underway so interested zinesters, comic creators and related creative types should make a note or get in touch with the Alternative Press crew for more details. The event has a policy of BYOB (Bring Your Own Blu-tak) whereby participants are invited to contribute to the art space on the day. Mix tape (well, CD) sharing is also planned. It will also serve as the launch of the Zine Friendly Blog, a useful resource of zine friendliness.

Comics Forbidden Planet blog: comic conventions series by Kate

Forbidden Planet International blog is doing a series on UK comic conventions, interviewing different convention organisers. This is both to promote some well-deserving conventions and also to flesh out some of the realities of convention organising. The series is now up to number 5; Mike Allwood of the Bristol Comics Expo. Earlier segments featured Hi-Ex’s Vicky Stonebridge, BICS’ Shane Chebsey, Caption’s Jay Eales and LUC’s Oli Smith so I have some catching up to do.

Events The weekend of the Alternative Press Festival by Kate

I can’t believe the Alternative Press Festival is already half over, but this weekend’s events look amazing. Today there is the Collaborama (at The Miller, London Bridge) and then there is the Alternative Press Fair tomorrow at St Aloysius Social Centre (a great venue that also hosted the last event).

Events The U.K. summer of zines by Kate

Well, ok, it’s not quite summer yet, but there are still more amazing zine and small press events coming up. After yet another awesome London Zine Symposium on the weekend, the Small Press Expo is on Saturday, 9th of May in Bristol. This is in conjunction with the Bristol International Comic Expo, also happening this weekend.

There is also another Alternative Press Festival planned for London although they are still being mysterious about exactly when, in late July and early August.

Comics Mini comics and visual diaries by Kate

Two things I picked up at last week’s Alternative Press Fair were Depressed Cat’s guide to Alternative Press and DIY Zines and Isabel Greenberg’s If I Could Only See Around Corners. The first is a tiny, tiny history of zines as told by Depressed Cat and was created by Lizz Lunney especially for the day and for the upcoming Brighton Zine Fair. A great way of explaining zines to people who don’t know and it fits in your pocket. If I Could Only See Around Corners is a ‘visual diary’, day to day stories of life captured as comics. I’m just kicking myself that I didn’t get the second part of the journal on the day too, because it really made me laugh (Isabel is funny and Isabel’s friends are funny) and i really hate just reading part one of something. You can find the journals and other self-published graphic novels at www.isabelnecessary.com .
