Comics blog The Beat have announced they will be moving off the Publishers Weekly site to a home all of their own. The new website, www.comicsbeat.com will go live “over the next few weeks”. This shift is largely down to the bigger changes happening at PW, including an imminent change of ownership. The full story here

Film Do-It-Yourself Empowerment - the short but great IPRC Documentary by Kate
Do-It-Yourself Empowerment: The IPRC is a 10 minute introduction to the Independent Publishing Resource Centre in Portland (US). The center has been running since 1998 and, like many great things, it all started with a photocopier. Now the IPRC holds workshops in media analysis and creation as well as providing an exensive zine library and zine-making facilities.
And if you’re feeling inspired after watching the documentary but find yourself on the wrong side of the Atlantic to get involved, the zine library at the 56a Infoshop in London is a similarly rad space.

Comics Webcomic recommendations from Feministe by Kate
Chally from Feministe has recommended ten (feminist-friendly) webcomics for those new to webcomics as well as those of us just looking for something new to read. I especially like Girls With Slingshots (it has a Q&A with creator Danielle Corsetto) and Cat and Girl which gets a mention in the comments.

New Media The end of Geocities: 26th Oct 2009 by Kate
Geocities has gone forever, and taken with it a bit of the sparkle of the web (and undoubtedly more than a few rainbox animated GIFs too).

New Media 56a Zine Library: rummaging for international zine month by Kate
The (re)launch of the zine library at the 56a InfoShop was a great excuse to rummage through boxes and boxes of zines. One that caught my eye was issue #3 of Media Whores, featuring an article about the Women’s Radio Network (a UK project that’s still active today) and an interview with Amy Schroeder, founder of Venus zine. They also have a copy of the Zine Librarian Zine, which is well worth checking out. More

New Media Double X: new(ish) online magazine launched by Kate
Double X, a spinoff of Slate’s XX Factor blog, has now launched and to celebrate, Slate has the editors answering reader’s questions. For the most part, the question are of the type that say more than they ask, but check out the interview if you want to find out if that name is really a work-friendly choice and what the the quintessential Double X story might be. The layout of Double X seems slightly less frightening than that of Slate. The jury, however, is still out on the rest of it. More

New Media Blogging: Bloodsport or 'equal opportunity attack forum' by Kate
I’m not sure I’d quite agree with the claim on the XX Factor blog that “If there was ever an equal opportunity attack forum, the Internet is it”. This was written in response to the South by Southwest (SXSW) panel Why Is Professional Blogging Bloodsport for Women?. Hmmm, have we forgotten Kathy Sierra already? I admit, I was a bit baffled by the SXSW panel description; “For professional female bloggers, writing online often gets painfully personal”. Maybe they meant to replace the word ‘online’ with perzines. Or emo songs.
