Film Review: Itty Bitty Titty Committee
The film tells the story of newly heartbroken Anna (Nicole Vicius), who’s drifting aimlessly after graduating high school, living with her parents and working in a breast augmentation clinic. Anna meets Sadie (Melonie Diaz), a radical feminist who offers her a chance to escape her boredom. Sadie, in turn, introduces Anna to the world of radical feminism via her guerrilla group “Clits in Action (CIA)”, (potentially a shout out to Cunts with Attitude ). The group disintegrate and loyalties are questioned after Anna and Sadie have a falling out.
Third wave references are dropped like crazy throughout the film and the music score comes straight from Riot Grrrl circa 1994. Kathleen Hannah seems to sing almost every song on the soundtrack, amongst them Le Tigre and Bikini Kill back catalogues and a interesting cover of a Heavens to Betsy song that opens the film.
And, yes, there are cameos galore, the film features a few of the main actors from Popular (_aka_ the.best.show.ever) as well as various cast members from But I’m a Cheerleader and DEBS. It is a shame that they didn’t let Leslie Grossman go crazy with the part of the consultant in the breast augmentation clinic Mary Cherry-style. The woman is a comic genius who should never be left in the background. Any apparently Guinevere Turner is to blame responsible for the film’s title.
So how accurate was the portrayal of underground feminist political groups? Only insofar as portraying the way personal relationships can complicate already complex political debates and how group energy inevitably peaks and implodes. The rest seems to lend more to the Tank Girl brand of feminism then anything based in reality. Bombing phallic symbols seems to have as much to do with radical feminism as burning bras: ie, not much. But then again, this oversimplification could just be Babbit’s way of portraying the either/or approach of youth in her trademark sledghammer style. Or maybe I’m just another humorless feminist, natch.
Basically, I laughed, I cringed, I recognised songs.
